Fake Insurance Renewals
Your auto/home insurance is expiring — renew today
Emails that look like they come from your insurance company (State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, etc.), claiming your policy is expiring and you need to renew. The renewal page is a phishing site designed to steal your payment information.
What to Watch For
- Sender email comes from a domain slightly different from the real insurer
- Policy details in the email don't match your actual coverage
- Renewal link goes to a suspicious URL, not your insurer's website
- Asks for information you've already provided (full DOB, SSN, bank routing numbers)
Examples
""Your State Farm auto insurance policy #SF-882947 expires in 7 days. Renew now at statefarm-renew.com to avoid a lapse in coverage and a $200 late fee.""
Why it works: Fear of losing insurance coverage is a strong motivator. The fake domain is one character different from the real one, which most people won't notice.
What to Do
Log in to your insurance company's official website or app directly to check your policy status. Never click renewal links in unsolicited emails. If you're unsure, call your agent using a number from your policy documents.
